In the ds version to drift all I had to do is press left and right. Now in the new version. I have to switch to manual to do that. Why?

I wanted to race my friend. We gave our friend codes to each other. Then we entered them in. We tried search for a friend. He said he found me. But I didn't find him. My globe just circled around with a question mark at the upper left corner and his code on the bottom of the screen.

Manual is the mode you've been using in all Mario

Kart games. Automatic is just for ppl who dont want to drift. Oh yeah, to powerslide all u need to do is hold the button, not press left and right.
